Gesitueerd in West-Europa is België een van de kleinste staten van de wereld. De maximum afstand noord-zuid bedraagt 193 km, oost-west is dit 233 km. De Belgische Noordzee-kust is 66 km lang, de rest van de grenzen werden voornamelijk kunstmatig afgebakend bij historische verdragen.
Vanwege zijn centrale ligging temidden van economische wereldmachten, werd de hoofdstad Brussel standplaats van enkele internationale organisaties, waar onder de EU en de NAVO. België is een constitutionele monarchie. Sinds 1993 is Albert II koning; hij volgde zijn dat jaar overleden broer Boudewijn op.
